Today I was taken aback when I presented to give seminar in front of my classmates. Let me first introduce myself. I am an engineering student from Electronics and Communication background; having keen interest in software though. I don't say I am updated with all the new technologies coming up in the market, however I make sure that I validate myself with the existing technologies or products that are already available in the market from long time. Today I was surprised after knowing that in the class of sixty engineering students only one student, other than me, knows and use "Ubuntu" operating system.
For those who are new to this term-Ubuntu, let me brief out saying that Ubuntu is an operating system like Windows-most of us are aware about. Ubuntu is an open-source OS and thus freely available. Ubuntu is highly stable, flexible and secure. The flexibility of Ubuntu can be better understood knowing that you can change the kernel, utilities, libraries, etc (For details about kernel, utilities and libraries refer to Link).
So I was telling about my amusement when I interacted with my classmates for the first time from technicality point of view. Most of my friends don't know the basic differences between "Linux" and "Unix". When I asked them to raise hand if using Linux, most of them, though using Linux, did not raise hand. This is another hole among students in India which must be taken seriously.
Actually all I am saying is that, I don't know if you have ever realized or observed it among people around you, engineering is considered to be highly reputed profession after medical. Engineers are supposed to work with people, interact with people, be an active part in nation construction. But, if you see in every engineering colleges except few like IITs, VIT, & NIITs, students are reserved. In spite of being in Final-Year, most of them don't have good communication skills required to sustain in professional world. They feel fighting a war when you ask them to give presentation. Some of them spent entire four years and don't know name of all his/her classmates.
I am not trying to criticizing anyone rather trying hard to put forward the type of environment prevails inside the classrooms of so-called engineering colleges.
All of us must think over it. What should be the type of educating being given in engineering colleges?
